It’s all in my mind,
I can run through pain…
=======================

Dear friends and family:

Two years ago I got involved with a wonderful organization: The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society’s Team In Training. My initial motivation was to honor the memory of my friend Sergio, who passed away back in our college days. He was diagnosed with leukemia when he was only 20 years old. My friends and I knew nothing about this disease, and we were scared; we didn’t know how to help! Today, I know I can help by doing something I really love: running.

I am still overwhelmed by the idea of running another marathon, but I’m doing it; I’ll be running 26.2 miles in the San Diego Marathon on June 6th to raise funds for the Leukemia Society. This time, not only Sergio will be in my heart and my mind during the race: the thought of Jade Monahan Chea, who is a Hodgkin’s Disease Survivor and my Honored Hero, will keep me going until I cross the finish line.

The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society sponsored research has been the catalyst for effective treatments of leukemia and other common kinds of cancers (i.e. breast and lung cancer). Leukemia, lymphoma, Hodgkin’s disease and myeloma are cancers that originate in the bone marrow and lymphatic tissues. These cancers have two features in common: cells that are abonormal because of altered DNA and cells that have accumulated in excessive amounts. Their cause remains unknown. However, the effectiveness of recently developed treatment methods and steady advances in research brings us closer to uncovering the cause and therefore finding a cure. In 1960 only 4% of children diagnosed with leukemia survived. Today, 81% of children with leukemia and 76% of those with Hodgkin’s disease will live thanks to the research funded by people involved in projects like Team in Training. Knowing that I am helping to support a family and working to make this disease 100% curable are the additional inspiration I need to finish this second marathon.

Please help me to help them! I cannot make it without your love, enthusiasm and financial support. Nearly 76% of all funds go directly to research and patient services, and every single penny I raise will go to the LLS (this said, you know I’m joking on the $75 option in the sponsor form!). Please feel free to include your motivational messages (very helpful!) and “curitas” (band aids). You can also include a ribbon with the name of someone you want me to honor, which I will pin to my shirt on the day of the marathon. Just print the Sponsor Form and mail it to me with your contribution by May 15th. Your prayers and positive vibes to sustain me during my training to cross the finish line will also be greatly appreciated.

On behalf of my heroes – those who are facing the battle against serious illness – THANK YOU!.

Con todo mi cariño,
